Mackinac Race Accident Claims Two Lives

Early on the morning of July 18 a squall ripped through part of the 355-boat Chicago-Mackinac race fleet. Crews rushed to take sails down and prepare for winds that would end up topping out at over 50 knots. On on boat, the 35-foot WingNuts, everything was done right; the crew was all in their safety gear, wearing flotation, and safely secured to the boat with tethers. The boat's sails were down, and everyone knew what to do.

Yachtsman dies after falling overboard in cross Channel race

(Telegraph) Chris Reddish, 46, fell from his sailing boat "Lion" 10 miles off the coast of Selsey Bill while taking part in the Morgan Cup Race between Cowes in the Isle of Wight and Cherbourg in France.

Mr Reddish, from Clapham, south west London, fell overboard at 11.45pm on Friday and was pulled from the water by fellow crew members but was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor who was also on board.

It is understood that Mr Reddish's son Alex was among the eight-strong crew.

Transatlantic Race 2011: British Soldier All About Duty to Country and Sailing
