After 3 1/2 year wait, Sloop Providence to sail again this weekend

(Pro-Jo) A replica of the Sloop Providence, the first warship to sail under America's Continental Navy, is ready to sail again. Boat builder and captain Thorpe Leeson, who purchased the 110-foot vessel from the city of Providence in February, said Thursday that he actually got the authorization from the city to start repairing and restoring the ship at Promet Marine Services off Allens Avenue last August, six months before purchasing it in February. If it all goes as planned, he said, he will launch the vessel around 2 p.m. Friday.

(SFC Press Point) As the oldest community sailing program in the country, Community Boating, Inc. (CBI) in Boston, Mass. has taught tens of thousands of people how to sail on the Charles River. In 2010, CBI reached new heights with their sailing education and instructor training programs. Over 4,000 adults, 2,300 youth, and 140 sailors with disabilities learned to sail at CBI last year. Outward Bound CEO 'horrified' at boat crash

(3 News) The Outward Bound Trust, which owns the boat that was struck in Picton yesterday, says its boat had stopped and was preparing to raise the sail when a catamaran collided with it, injuring six students. The last of those students were released from hospital this morning. Outward Bound says the cutter was struck by a dolphin watch catamaran near Wedge Point in the Marlborough Sounds, 11 people were onboard. READ MORE

Cadet 'mutiny' scuppers German navy's tall ship

(Independent) German defence officials yesterday ordered its navy's prestigious three-masted training-ship to break from its round-the-world voyage and dock in Argentina, as ministry staff flew in to investigate reports of a mutiny after a female recruit plunged to her death. The Gorch Fock, a traditional square-rigged sailing ship, is the pride of the German navy and has been used for training recruits since 1958. But a leaked parliamentary report has revealed that crew members mutinied against officers after the cadet fell 80ft from a mast and died from her injuries.

Rhode Island trade group names Boater of the Year

(Soundings) Middletown, R.I. resident Sheila McCurdy was named Rhode Island Boater of the Year this week by the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association at opening-day ceremonies of the Providence Boat Show. She was given the group's John H. Chafee Award, named after the former Rhode Island governor and senator. "Sheila has excelled in sailing individually and has given an equal amount back to recreational boating through her work and volunteer pursuits," said Tom Rich, president of New England Boatworks and president of the association, in a statement.
